General Comments

I have never come across a company that is so unprofessional as Fitness First. It has no customer service skills and is not interested in the slightest, if a customer has concern/complaint.

Like so many of the reviews on this site, if you make a complaint and try to terminate your contract, they will NOT listen to you. We made calls, left messages, sent letters, recorded delivery and not one response. Only 4 months later did we manage to speak to someone to acknowledge our complaint. We are thoroughly disgusted with the lack of service this chain gives their customers.

Despite all our attempts to resolve the matter and no response from Fitness First, they sent account to debt recovery agency.

I have been a member of JJB Health Club and can highly recommend them. The only time I had to discuss anything was the very first months payment which was at peak rate and should have been off peak. They apologised and rectified their mistake immediately. Their customer service speaks volumes about how a club should treat their customers when they are paying monthly fees for a service.

Just because Fitness First is cheaper than most gyms, please please take advice from the other comments on this site. You get what you pay for and you won't get any customer care service. Spend a little more and go to a better gym, with better facilities and much better service.

Pretty much all of it

General Comments

I joined the Preston Lancashire Fitness First gym, but it's better to pay a little more elsewhere. The staff are welcoming and helpful until you've signed up, they then ignore you. The instructors are now employed on a self-employed basis, and they only get paid a commission from personal sessions, hence they will engage you in conversation for that sole purpose, which gets annoying. The changing room (men's) was horrendous, and obviously not cleaned at all. However, that is nothing compared to when you try to leave.

I was told that I couldn't cancel as I had signed an agreement for a year's membership. I asked to see a copy, which they couldn't produce. After numerous calls to the gym and the Customer Services centre, and also the collection agency, I resorted to a strongly worded letter giving them 14 days to produce a copy with my signature on, as legally, they had no right to demand the money from me. This worked, and they then left me alone.

If anyone is having the same problems, just cancel the Direct Debit and demand to see a copy of whatever you signed.

I have been a member at this gym for a number of years, but only because of its location. If there was any gym in the near bye area i would move there straight away.
When i joined i paid £100 loyalty bonus, for which i was told the fees would never go up. They did. I was told to read the small print
Due to the nature of the building it is very badly laid out.
Machines are constantly broken, some for months at a time Some wieghts need fixing.
There is mould in the showers, the drains stink, often there is no shower gel (this week we had conditioner instead of shower gel) people go into the sauna are in underwear, if the sauna is working!
Some members have no respect for the weights, throwing them about, often breaking. They are never talked to by the management.
All in all i can say that this is the worst gym i have ever been to, i can only hope someone opens a rival gym close by soon
